#ThisIsYourFilm #ThisIsMyFilm

Yup, it’s that time of the year again when social media bequeaths us to write lists about films. Last year it was the #1 film on your birthday every year you’ve been on this planet we call Earth – this year it’s your favourite film released in each year you’ve been here.
Thankfully, I love making lists. I have notebooks filled with lists of rubbish; potential compilation CDs, favourite books, comic book characters, action figures I want to be released – you name it, I’ve probably got a list for it (that’s quite an exaggeration though so don’t hold me to it.

This was a particularly difficult list to make and unfortunately many of my favourite films had to be omitted from the list as they were edged out by films I love, or loved at the time of making the list, a fraction more. (Apologies to the Truman Show, Her, Dead Man’s Shoes, Good Will Hunting, Boogie Nights, the Goonies, Toy Story, Die Hard, Out of Sight, Starship Troopers, and many, many more.)
Anyway, without further ado, here are my top films from 1981 through to 2016 (pointless doing choosing one for this year.)

1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982 Blade Runner
1983 Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi
1984 Ghostbusters
1985 Back to the Future
1986 Labyrinth
1987 Robocop
1988 Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
1989 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
1990 Total Recall
1991 Beauty & the Beast
1992 the Last of the Mohicans
1993 Jurassic Park
1994 Pulp Fiction
1995 Heat
1996 the Frighteners
1997 LA Confidential
1998 Rushmore
1999 Magnolia
2000 O Brother Where Art Thou?

‘Sunshine Blogger Award Q&A’ a Response to Jonathan Cardwell

My buddy and fellow blogger, Jonathan Cardwell (Twitter @jonny_c85) answered some questions and proposed I do the same. Here are my responses;

1.What is your favourite childhood film and why?

A genuinely tough question to answer. I have so many childhood memories entwined with movies. You know what kids are like, they can watch films five times a day for a month, then move on to the next one.

If I had to choose, I’d probably say Return of the Jedi. A film that I would rent from the video shop every time I stayed over at my grandparent’s house. A film that kept my love of Star Wars burning when the embers around had gone out in all but true nerd core culture until the Special Editions were released in 1997. A film that still gets better with every watch.

2. What is your favourite film of the year so far and why?

I have seen four Five Star films released in 2016. They’re pretty damn diverse too.

  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Sing Street
  • The Nice Guys
  • The Jungle Book.

I’d say Captain America is my favourite though. You know I’m a big Captain America nut and a couple of small problems aside, I absolutely loved this.

3. Which is your social media of choice – Facebook or Twitter? And why?

Twitter is my favourite. Where else can you interact with artists whose work you adore?

4. What is your favourite season and why?

Autumn. I’m quite a fan of nature and finding beauty in it. The colours this time of year are stunning and the wildlife is pretty damn active too. Cold nights are drawing in, you can layer up. I love everything about it.

5. What is your favourite television series and why?

The Office: an American Workplace. Though there are many other shows I love, this is the one I can put on at any time and laugh my ass off at, complete with an adorable and perfectly executed cast of characters.

Close favourite, The Simpsons had a great run of 8 consecutive seasons of gold (seasons 3-10,) but its gone way off the reservation since the turn of the century.

6. Which would you prefer and why- dream job set for life or travel the world (two years max)?

Dream job, although I’m still not sure what that would be. Probably a toy shop that I’m not financially dependant on.

7. You have the chance to interview five people from any aspect of films and film-making, dead or alive, who would you pick?

Hmmm. Ok.

  • Steven Spielberg (greatest director ever-  no arguments)
  • Walt Disney
  • Jack Nicholson
  • Kathleen Kennedy
  • Jim Henson

8. What is your favourite film genre?

Due to the impact on my life, of films like Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, Alien, the Thing, Back to the Future etc it has to be science fiction.

9. What is your least favourite film genre?

Don’t even have to think about this one; Westerns. There are a few a really like, but the genre as a whole I just find dour. I blame having to study the Searchers at A-Level Media Studies.

10. What 2016 film release are you looking forward to the most before the year ends?

Definitely Rogue One. So damn excited for this one.

11. Which character is your favourite, Han Solo or Indiana Jones?

This is a very tough question for me. A true child of the 80s, I worshipped both of these guys.

I’d say Indiana Jones though. As a child I used to go on adventures as Indy-Ian Nesbit. With my satchel full of supplies I’d go off into the garden in search of ancient McGuffins. My mum said she once looked out of the kitchen window to see my traversing across the top of the climbing frame; probably ready to take on an imaginary Mola Ram.

“You Gotta Go Your Own Way”

tumblr_muz5vvGCOD1rd7et2o4_1280

Despite only being released in 2013, the Way Way Back is fast becoming a go-to film of mine for times when I’m finding things difficult. Funny, heart-warming, and ultimately life affirming, it is a modern gem.

I can’t remember whether I’ve watched it two, or maybe three times so far this year. It’s not that I’m having a difficult year, (well, I am,) but it’s not been that bad.

(I don’t half ramble)

Anyway, this is a film I can put on and lose myself in. It’s the kind of character building story that I wish I had when I was that age. At 14 I was awkward & overweight. I had a happy childhood and for the majority, a happy teenage life, but it was a life that missed that one catalyst to set me on the right path.

I’m not turning this into a story of self pity, I have no reason for pity. I just wanted to write a little something about this film because I love it so much.

Remember that feeing when the time came for your family holiday to end and it was heartbreaking? This is how that film makes me feel. Eternally happy for the memories, but distraught because the memories were, well just that. Things to remember, not things to continue.

As with previous things I’ve written on here, it’s hard for me to stay focussed. Erm, just go and watch the film, then listen to the soundtrack a few times, then watch the film again, and repeat.

Oh, and as usual, Sam Rockwell dances.

Love you, bye x

All Quiet on the Neston Front

Hey kids,

Yeah. Been a bit quiet of late, been without a laptop for a while so not been able to write anything.

How’s it going? Hope you’re all well.

What have I been upto? Hmmm. Not much to be honest. It’s been over a year since I actually went into work. I was signed off on the sick last March and then subsequently ‘let go’ in October. I’m looking for new work but in all honesty I’m not entirely sure I’m actually ready.

This all sounds very ambiguous and it’s probably because I don’t talk about it much, you see, I suffer quite badly from anxiety attacks and severe depression. It’s one of those things that when I worked for the Benefit Agency, way back at the turn of the century, I thought it was a piss take. However, having suffered from it for quite a few years now, I know very well that it is not.

I don’t really know why I’m telling you people this, it’s probably because I know no-one really reads this shit, so I guess it’s just a confession to myself

Ian, I know you’re suffering and I know it’s hard but keep fighting.

Yeah, I have to tell myself, otherwise I’d be lost in a pit of despair and Netflix.

Oh, and I fucking loved Captain America: Civil War. I might write a little bit about that later.

It’s good to be back… I think x

Oh, Captain. My Captain.

I really wanted to write about Captain America: Civil War. I even got eight paragraphs into a review of sorts, but my brain is an absolute mess and I can’t write anything particularly cohesive at the moment.

I will say a few things about Captain America instead.

He makes me want to be a better person, a stronger person. Yes, Iron Man is cool, but Captain America is the epitome of all that is good. I sat watching Civil War wondering how anyone could actually disagree with Captain America. Well, turns out it was just guilt on Stark’s behalf because he fucked up big time in Age of Ultron.

I cried watching Civil War. I didn’t blubber, but my eyes filled with tears along with Steve’s when he heard of Peggy’s passing. My eyes filled with tears when Sharon used one of my favourite Cap quotes. My heart warmed when Sam & Bucky looked on as Cap got a kiss.

I’m rambling. I’m rambling because I love Cap.

Here’s a few examples of why I love Cap.

a Song from Four Years Ago

Pretty Hairy (for a Bald Guy)

Bantha, Wampa, Mynock, Ray,

Give it to me Nesty,
Uh-huh uh-huh
Give it to me Nesty,
Uh-huh uh-huh
Give it to me Nesty
Uh-huh uh-huh
And all the lemons say I’m pretty hairy for a bald guy

Uno, dos, tres, look at Nesty’s facial hairs

You know it’s kind of hard
for a balding guy today
the weather’s getting cool
and his hat has gone away.
He may have a bit of stubble
but that’ll hardly keep him warm
goes frosty in the winter
and makes him look forlorn

but don’t dismay, your beard is great
and if you grow it long enough you’ll look like Terry Waite
it’s got a luscious sheen, it’s nice and clean
to shave? no way, to shave? no way
So if you can’t grow hair, don’t despair
At least you’ll know you can always grow a beard that’s fair
The world needs bearded Nesties, so (hey, hey)
grow that lovely beard!

Give it to me Nesty,
Uh-huh uh-huh
Give it to me Nesty,
Uh-huh uh-huh
Give it to me Nesty
Uh-huh uh-huh
And all the lemons say I’m pretty hairy for a bald guy

He has some cool slacks
Not just any will suffice
soft, and brown, and smooth
he paid a pretty price
crabwalking on the stage now,
his head starts to rotate
the crowd of Pips stop and stare
as he begins to masturbate

but don’t dismay, your beard is great
and if you grow it long enough you’ll look like Terry Waite
it’s got a luscious sheen, it’s nice and clean
to shave? no way, to shave? no way
So if you can’t grow hair, don’t despair
At least you’ll know you can always grow a beard that’s fair
The world needs bearded Nesties, so (hey, hey)
grow that lovely beard!

Now he’s getting a tattoo, yeah
He’s gettin’ ink done
He asked for a “Chewbacca” but they drew “Lumpwaroo” his son
his moustache was too long
it was tickling his lip
he gave it a nice trim
now he’s, he’s adored by Pips!

Give it to me Nesty,
Uh-huh uh-huh
Give it to me Nesty,
Uh-huh uh-huh
Give it to me Nesty
Uh-huh uh-huh

Uno, dos, tres, look at Nesty’s facial hairs

but don’t dismay, your beard is great
and if you grow it long enough you’ll look like Terry Waite
it’s got a luscious sheen, it’s nice and clean
to shave? no way, to shave? no way
So if you can’t grow hair, don’t despair
At least you’ll know you can always grow a beard that’s fair
The world needs bearded Nesties
The world needs bearded Nesties
The world needs bearded Nesties, so (hey, hey)
grow that lovely beard!
